Unidentified Figure on a Khyang
Metal, sculpture
Copper with fire gilding
7.0 inches
Tibet or China
Ca. 18th century
Indeterminate style
This figure is possibly a member of the retinue
of Shri Devi who is shown seated astride a kyhang. This attribution is suggested
by the eye on the rump of the khyang, a characteristic feature of Shri Devi's
mount as well. The figure's fierce appearence and attributes suggest that
it belongs to the class of deities that serve as benefactors of Tibetan
Buddhism.
