Metal, sculpture Copper with fire gilding

Central Tibet
Ca. 17th century
Indeterminate style
The small, hidden sow's head on the proper right side the figure's head
identifies her as Vajravarahi,"Adamantine Sow." The sow represents
delusion which the goddess
destroys. Further, the sword she holds cross-identifies her as Kadgha Dakini,
"Sky-goer with Sword." As Vajravarahi, she is the primary female
goddess who manifests all the prajnas (female aspects) of the heruka (peaceful/wrathful)
Buddhas. As Kadgha Dakini, she is a specific aspect of the goddess, who,
with her sword of wisdom, severs delusion. The double identification of
this image is a common method of communicating multiple layers of meaning
in Buddhist art.
